2009 Titleholders
| Miss Connecticut 2009 Sharalynn Kuziak ![]() Photo by Catherine Fiehn Sharalynn Kuziak would like to be a lawyer some day, but for now, she’s focusing on becoming Miss America 2010. Sharalynn, 22, and from Southington, became Miss Connecticut 2009 on June 27 at the Garde Arts Center in New London. She received a fitness award during preliminary competitions, then on finals night, received the overall fitness and interview awards. Sharalynn is a 2009 cum laude graduate of Quinnipiac University with a degree in legal studies and a minor in music. She began her community service platform, the “Walkin’ on Sunshine” musical program, in memory of her aunt, who died from cancer. Sharalynn is a singer, dancer and piano player whose mission it is to educate people about the healing power of music. She has visited more than 200 convalescent homes, hospitals, hospices and schools with her program and is looking forward to continuing to bridge the generation gap by continuing to perform. Sharalynn is a member of Lambda Epsilon Chi Honor Society and has received many awards for her leadership and citizenship. She wants to create a legacy of accessibility and visibility as Miss Connecticut 2009. |
Connecticut's Outstanding Teen 2009 Acacia Courtney ![]() Photo by Catherine Fiehn Acacia Courtney became Miss Connecticut’s Outstanding Teen on June 27 at the Garde Arts Center in New London. Acacia received the preliminary talent and fitness awards, then in the finals competition, won the overall talent award for her ballet en pointe presentation of “La Esmeralda.” A senior at the Hopkins School in New Haven, Acacia is a pre-professional ballet dancer who takes lessons in New York City four times a week. She is a part of the American Ballet Theatre Professional Intensive Program, the Steps on Broadway Ballet School and was a Youth America Grand Prix Ballet Competition semi-finalist in 2009. Her community service effort, “Empowering Youth Through Education,” is a two-part program that includes academic tutoring and peer mentoring directed at middle and high school students. She focuses on educating her peers on the importance of positive choices because of a partnership with Breakthrough and Mothers Against Drunk Driving. Acacia was a National Merit Scholar candidate in 2008 and ranked in the 98th percentile for the National Spanish Exam when she was in ninth-grade. |
